Professional Semester 2 - Art Education Statement of Teaching Philosophy
Art Teaching Philosophy
Alex Reeve
I believe art education is a foundational discipline that supports the development of the whole child, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and culturally. Art provides a somatic, process-based language for meaning-making that connects mind and body through material engagement, perception, and reflection. Drawing on the work of Elliot Eisner, I value art as a way of thinking that enables learners to attend to nuance, construct interpretation, and generate understanding beyond words or numbers. In my classroom, art is not treated as a supplementary subject but as a space where students can explore ideas, take creative risks, and develop critical awareness of the world around them. I prioritize kindness, inclusion, and Indigenous ways of knowing to honour diverse perspectives and build learning communities grounded in respect, reciprocity, and relationship.
My teaching centres on process-based, flexible learning that supports student agency, critical thinking, and emotional safety. I use formative assessment strategies such as discussion, peer feedback, and reflective activities to guide learning and encourage growth. Students are offered choice in how they express understanding through visual, written, collaborative, or technological forms of creation. I aim to help students become confident, thoughtful, and socially aware individuals who can observe closely, question critically, and express authentically. Ultimately, my goal is for students to leave the art classroom feeling valued, capable, and empowered to engage meaningfully with others and with the world.
